At approximately 5:45 pm on Thursday, July 27, 2017 the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched as Automatic Aid to the Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company for the Dwelling Fire, 300 block of Riverview Road in the Kingstown area of Queen Annes County. The first unit from Chestertown VFC arrived three (3) minutes later with heavy fire issuing from an attached two car garage. The fire was spreading into the home.

Our Engine 6-7 was the first fire suppression unit to arrive and deployed a 2-1/2″ attack hose, employing what we call a “blitz attack.” The object is to hit the fire hard and fast, darkening as much fire as possible in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of water. Our crew was successful in attaining that goal. Chestertown crews then entered the structure in order to gain control of that fire not affected by the blitz attack. With the arrival of incoming mutual aid equipment, additional hose lines were placed in service.

Personnel were rotated out of the structure and cycled through a “Rehab” (short for rehabilitation) section. Firefighters were evaluated for any potential medical issues by Emergency Medical Services and had their vital signs checked. They were given the opportunity to “cool down” and rehydrate. After a suitable amount of break time, they were eligible to return to firefighting tasks. The rehab function was handled by personnel from the Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Queen Annes County Department of Emergency Services Paramedic 500, assigned to the Church Hill Fire Station.

A representative from the Maryland State Fire Marshals Office was called to the scene. An Origin & Cause investigation is currently being conducted. For further information, please contact the fire marshal’s office.

Crews operated on this incident for about 2-1/2 hours. There were no injuries to civilians or emergency personnel.
