FUN FILLED NIGHT IN
QUARTERS |
11/02/07 -
With it finally beginning to feel like fall around here
again, the Chief decided it was time to start up another
season of engine room wiffle ball. Just as members and
their families were arriving at the station, Local Box
5-12 was struck for an AFA at the Eastern Shore Animal
Hospital. Engine 67 responded with a crew of 4 within
seconds of the station being alerted. Engine 67 arrived
approx. 2 minutes later and investigated the alarm.
A short while later, while promoting inter-company
relations (w/ QA Chief 5) QA Rescue Box 5-9 was struck
for the MVA at Church Hill Rd and Rolphs Wharf Rd, with
the River City Volunteers being alerted for the Rescue.
Engine 67 added itself to the call and arrived just
behind Chief 5 to find a 4 vehicle accident. Crews
assisted with pt. care, securing hazards, and scene
lighting. The Rescue responded within a minute of
dispatch with a crew of 6 and assisted with fluid and
debris cleanup. Fire Police from Station 6 assisted PD
with traffic control as Rt. 213 was completely closed to
traffic for approx. 1 hour.
Once everybody returned to quarters, teams were drawn
up, and a fun filled evening of wiffle ball commenced.
Unfortunately the game was cut short due to another
call. This time it was for an AFA at the new Kent Center
facility 215 Scheeler Rd. The Engine, Tower and Chief
hit the street all within a minute, arriving to find a
malfunctioning alarm. Crews returned just in time to put
all the equipment away, spend some time socializing, and
then take all the sleepy kids (and parents) home to bed.
While all this was going on, the Auxiliary was holding a
Vera Bradley Bingo fundraiser.
The calls this evening brought our yearly total to 523
alarms for the year. With just shy of 2 months to go, we
are on a pace to approach, or break the 600 call mark by
the end of the year. |

FIRE WITH RESCUE |
|
03/21/2007 1008 HRS. Kent dispatched
Fire Box 60-10 for a house fire w/ rescue @ 24581 Willow
Oak Ln. off Johnsontown Rd. (QUAKER NECK) Command 6-1
responded w/ Deputy Chief 6 (NEAL). He was first to
arrive to find a single story wood frame residence w/
heavy fire through the roof. The caller couldn't advise
if the resident was home or not. Engine 6-7 w/5 was
directed to lay in and pull the 2 1/2 & 1 3/4 crosslays.
Rescue Pumper 4 was next to arrive picking up the supply
from E 6-7. Tanker 6, Tanker 4 & Tanker 7 shuttled water
from the town limits of the city. Units worked together
to perform primary and secondary searches of the
residence. The searches came up negative. This is always
good, and today was even better because after a couple
of bottles we asked PEE WEE "what's up" and he said his
family may be inside, so he was calling around. Even
though searches were negative, the Chief said do it
again until we are positive they aren't in there.

HOUSE FIRE WITH RESCUE -
327 FAIRVIEW DR. |
|
03/09/07
Units were dispatched to the QA 5-12 box to a reported
house fire. Chief 6 (Joyner) responded and arrived at
17:12 to find a single story wood frame dwelling with
smoke showing. Chief Joyner approached the residence to
find the elderly resident still inside unable to leave
due to a physical disablement. Due to an MVC in the QA
5-6 box involving a power pole there was a power surge
in the area making the furnace back fire which
disconnected the flue to the chimney emitting smoke into
the dwelling. Chief Joyner with the assist of the crew
from Engine 64 removed the resident and investigated the
problem. After finding the problem, turning off the
furnace, and smoke removal units were placed available.

HOUSE
FIRE / WFD |
02/16/2007 1118 HRS. Kent dispatched
another WFD @ the corner of High St & Water St. The
transfer companies hit the street within seconds and
arrived to find that the generator to the rear of
the residence was smoking. This was a result of the
motor being cold and all this call was a Diesel
generator starting. This would have been Chief 5's
(Thorpe) first working fire as the new Chief of
Betterton. After he found out what it was, he
started breathing again. If this was a fire, this
would have been a huge loss to the town and to Chief
5 because this is one of the biggest homes in the
historic district of Chestertown valued @ around 15
million dollars. Units cleared in 15 minutes. Units
on Scene or Responding: Engine 5-3, KCD Quint 45,
