BUSY DAY IN
THE 5-12 |
|
12/29/08 - At 1000 hrs. Exactly, the 669th call of
the year was sounded for a house fire with the only
address given of Truslow Rd. near the Chester River".
Chief 6 arrived 3 minutes later to find a 1 1/2 story
bungalow that was currently being used as a hobby shop
with heavy smoke showing. Tower 6 arrived first and
assumed first in engine and truck responsibilities,
deploying an 1 3/4 hand line to the side door. Tanker 6
and Eng. 6-8 arrived quickly behind the tower, with the
engine pulling an additional line. First in crews were
met with high heat and very poor visibility. Immediate
attempts to ventilate from inside by the tower crew were
severely hampered by plywood and pegboard displays
filled with hobby items that had been placed and mounted
over and in front of the windows and other door. Rescue
6 and QA Eng. 55 then arrived and along with personnel
from Tower 6 began both horizontal and vertical
ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered on both floors
and a third line from Eng. 68 was pulled by QA PM 600 to
assist, much of this was due to the fire load and the
large amounts of flammable liquids and glues used for
the hobbies. QA Eng. 55 established a water supply from
Tanker 2 QA Tanker 7 and QA Tanker 6. Once the building
was ventilated the crews inside made quick work of the
fire. Units remained on scene mopping up hot spots, and
assisting the FM office. Chestertown units operated for
3 hours and 10 minutes with 19 personnel on scene and a
total of 22 volunteers responding to the call.

WORKING STRUCTURE FIRE ON RICAUDS BRANCH ROAD |
|
11/24/2008 - At 1958 hours, units from
Rock Hall, Chestertown, Kennedyville, Betterton, and
Kent EMS were alerted for a working house fire at 23059
Ricauds Branch Rd. Tower 6 responded within two minutes
of the call, followed closely by the remainder of the
assignment from Chestertown. Rock Hall units arrived to
find an old 2 1/2 story dwelling that had been converted
into a hunting lodge with heavy fire showing. Tower 6
arrived moments behind the first in engine and initiated
truck Co. Ops. Due to rapidly deteriorating conditions,
crews were pulled from the inside and tactics were
switched to defensive operations with a call put in for
an additional tanker, this brought QA Tanker 5 to the
scene from its standby in Chestertown. Exterior
operations were hampered because the exterior of the
house had been re-enforced with heavy plywood covering
the clapboard siding, and the doors and windows had been
braced and covered for security. While crews worked to
try and to gain access, additional lines were pulled.
After working unsuccessfully to open up the house, it
was found that the fire burning inside had made the
structure very unstable, and for safety Command ordered
crews away from the building and allowed it to burn
until the walls collapsed . At this point Command
downgraded operations, holding Rock Hall units and
Tanker 6. Chestertown units operated for 4 hrs. and 46
minutes with 17 volunteers on scene and a total of 23

On
Thursday, Sept. 25 at 1457 hrs., just as the first
Nor-Easter of the season was moving into the area, units
from Chestertown, Kennedyville, Betterton, Rock Hall,
Church Hill, K&QA Rescue Squad, and Kent EMS were
alerted for a working building fire at CreaFill Fibers
on Worton Rd. (former CFF plant). As units were
responding Dispatch advised of numerous calls reporting
fire showing (again) and smoke could be observed from
over a mile away. At 1507 Hrs. PM 1-1 arrived with smoke
showing from Building #2. Workers advised that there had
been an explosion in the air handling system, and there
was active fire burning in all four air handlers,
connecting pipes, auger system, and a large tank
connected to one of the machines. PM1-1 established
Worton Rd. Command, and due to short staffing on the
original assignment requested the box to be
filled. E6-7, Twr6, Trk7, and RP-4 were directed into
the scene with the remainder of the assignment placed in
level 2 staging at the entrance. E6-7 arrived secured
their own water supply and stretched hand lines to the
air handlers and interior, Twr 6 and Trk 7 proceeded
into the alleyway and placed their mains to the air
handling system. Just as last time crews hunkered down
and prepared for an extended operation of unloading the
system, and extinguishing any remaining product. As a
result of the explosion there ware also ground pad
transformers and electrical service involved in the
fire. Choptank Electric responded and secured the
utilities. Upon the arrival of Cmd 6-1 Command was
transferred to Chief 6. Due to the limited water supply
on the Bravo side of the facility, Tankers were assigned
to supply Twr 6, the crew from E3, was sent to the
interior to assist, and QA E-51 established the RIT.
Once the power was isolated, interior crews worked in
conjunction with CreaFill employees to unload and
extinguish the burning product. As crews were rotated
out for rehab, QA E-51 was re-assigned to assist in the
interior, and QA RE-7 was moved up from its transfer
detail to fill the RIT position. E 2 was now dispatched
to stand by at the River City. The incident was placed

Kennedyville, and Kent EMS were alerted for an outside
gas leak at 24320 Waterview Ln. Kinnards Point. Engine
67 w/4, Tanker 6 w/1 and Rescue 6 w/3 responded on the
call. RP-4 and E-67 arrived together to find a six wheel
dump truck sitting on top of the tank with an active
leak. Crews from RP-4, E-67 and R-6 placed a protection
line on the leak and began formulating a plan to safely
remove the truck and stop the leak. Due to the box
assignment still being short, Waterview Command (Chief
4) requested an additional tanker and an ambulance to
the scene. Tanker 6 was placed in nurse tanker position
with Tanker 4 and Tanker 3 shuttling water. After
unsuccessful attempts to remove the truck were made with
equipment on scene, a call was placed to a nearby farmer
who brought a tractor to the scene and was able to
remove the vehicle. It was determined that the relief
valve had been sheared off and the leak was subsequently
plugged with wedges. After arrival of the gas company,
it was determined the quickest and safest way to render
the scene safe was to allow the tank to be vented
off. Once the scene was safe, units cleared. River City

units from Chestertown, Kennedyville, Church Hill, K&QA
Rescue Squad, and Kent EMS responded for a report of a
working building fire at 123 Washington Ave. While en
route Chief 6 was advised of numerous 911 calls
reporting an explosion at that location. Chief 6 arrived
to find a historical 7 unit apartment building with
light smoke showing and significant structural damage
from the explosion. Engine 6-8 secured its own water
supply, and advanced a 1 3/4 line into the building.
Eng. 6-8's crew performed a search of the apartment that
had been most damaged by the explosion, removing 1
animal, and confirming that there was no active fire in
that area. Crews from Tower 6 and Rescue 6 performed
primary searches on the remaining apartments w/ negative
findings, other than a second animal removed from the
third floor by the tower crew. RP-4 and QA Eng. 51
performed secondary searches, secured utilities, and
performed a more thorough damage assessment of the
building. During secondary search the crew from rescue 6
found a third pet in the building and removed it. During
this removal one FF was injured by the obviously very
frightened cat. Don't worry Lt. Russum, we wont tell
anyone how you were mauled by the cat while rescuing it.
The County Building inspector, Fire Marshal's office,
and town representatives all responded to the scene to
assist. The cause of the explosion was believed to have
been caused by an LP gas leak in the basement, and the
building was ultimately condemned for occupancy. Units
operated on scene for approx. 3 hours with 22
volunteers.
While Chestertown units were operating on scene, QA

site at Morgnec Creek, while Crumpton units
established lighting and began salvage operations.
Once it was determined that the draft site would not
be needed Eng. 4 was re-directed to the scene to

SLIPPERY SITUATION |
|
02/12/2008 -
While crews
were putting equipment back in service, it became
obvious that due to the warm winters of late, motorists
have forgotten that when it is cold and sleeting,
bridges freeze before roads, and sure enough at 1515

firehouse and we were dispatched for the MVC on the
Chester River Bridge. Chief 6 and E-64 arrived to find a
2 vehicle MVC on a very icy bridge. Rescue 6 was
attended but held in station. Units operated for approx.
