BUSY DAY IN THE 5-12

12/29/08 - At 1000 hrs. Exactly, the 669th call of the year was sounded for a house fire with the only address given of  Truslow Rd. near the Chester River". Chief 6 arrived 3 minutes later to find a 1 1/2 story bungalow that was currently being used as a hobby shop with heavy smoke showing. Tower 6 arrived first and assumed first in engine and truck responsibilities, deploying an 1 3/4 hand line to the side door. Tanker 6 and Eng. 6-8 arrived quickly behind the tower, with the engine pulling an additional line. First in crews were met with high heat and very poor visibility. Immediate attempts to ventilate from inside by the tower crew were severely hampered by plywood and pegboard displays filled with hobby items that had been placed and mounted over and in front of the windows and other door. Rescue 6 and QA Eng. 55 then arrived and along with personnel from Tower 6 began both horizontal and vertical ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered on both floors and a third line from Eng. 68 was pulled by QA PM 600 to assist, much of this was due to the fire load and the large amounts of flammable liquids and glues used for the hobbies. QA Eng. 55 established a water supply from Tanker 2 QA Tanker 7 and QA Tanker 6. Once the building was ventilated the crews inside made quick work of the fire. Units remained on scene mopping up hot spots, and assisting the FM office. (former CFF plant). As units were responding Dispatch advised of numerous calls reporting fire showing (again) and smoke could be observed from over a mile away. At 1507 Hrs. PM 1-1 arrived with smoke showing from Building #2. Workers advised that there had been an explosion in the air handling system, and there was active fire burning in all four air handlers, connecting pipes, auger system, and a large tank connected to one of the machines. PM1-1 established Worton Rd. Command, and due to short staffing on the original assignment requested the box to be filled. E6-7, Twr6, Trk7, and RP-4 were directed into the scene with the remainder of the assignment placed in level 2 staging at the entrance. E6-7 arrived secured their own water supply and stretched hand lines to the air handlers and interior, Twr 6 and Trk 7 proceeded into the alleyway and placed their mains to the air handling system. Just as last time crews hunkered down and prepared for an extended operation of unloading the system, and extinguishing any remaining product. As a result of the explosion there ware also ground pad transformers and electrical service involved in the fire. Choptank Electric responded and secured the utilities.
