INDUSTRIAL FIRE AT WORTON CFF PLANT

03/06/2008 - On Thursday, March 6 at 1059 hrs.  Kent County 911 began taking calls reporting a working building fire at the CFF plant on Worton Rd. CFF is an industrial facility that recycles cellulose/ paper products to be used in a myriad of other ways including asphalt, food products, and movie making. At 1101 hrs. units from Chestertown, Kennedyville, Betterton, Church Hill, Crumpton  K&QA Rescue Squad, and Kent EMS were dispatched. Chief 6 arrived approximately 4 minutes later with fire showing from the ventilation system of the industrial machinery located inside the building. Employees reported that there had been an explosion in the ventilation system. Engine 67 arrived next and stretched a 1 3/4 line and knocked down the fire in the ventilation system. Tower 6, and RP-4 were directed to the inside to check for extension. Tower 6 crew reported that there was a large amount of burning paper located in the augers and holding tank of one of the processing machines. FD Personnel worked in conjunction with CFF employees in securing the power to the machines, and performing extensive overhaul in removing and wetting down the burning debris. WORKING FIRE IN THE 60-5

03/03/2008 - On March 3, 2008 at 1931 hrs., Chestertown, along with units from Kennedyville, Crumpton, K&QA Rescue Squad, and Kent EMS were dispatched for a reported working barn fire (wait, there aren't any barns on that road) at 9181 American Legion Dr.  Engine 67 responded within 2 minutes, followed quickly by the tower, Tanker and Rescue. Engine 67 arrived approx. 4 minutes later with heavy fire showing from side "C" and this was actually a house, not a barn. Engine 67 initiated an attack with the 2 1/2 Santa Rosa on the shed located against the rear of the house, while the Tower crew pulled a 1 3/4 line and forced entry into the residence finding heavy fire in one room and the attic area. The rescue crew assisted with opening up, preventing the fire from extending any further into the residence. Engine 4 established a draft site at Morgnec Creek, while Crumpton units established lighting and began salvage operations. Once it was determined that the draft site would not be needed Eng. 4 was re-directed to the scene to assist. Betterton transferred an engine into the River City. Chestertown units operated on the scene for 2 hours and 43 minutes with 19 volunteers.
