STRUCTURE FIRE – OLD MORGNEC RD.
08/21/09 – On the evening of Friday August 21st, just as a series of storms passed through the area, an announcement was made over the Kent County Radios by neighboring Queen Anne’s County Communications that the Kent County OES/911 Center was out of service, and requested personnel to staff their stations. It seems that for the umpteenth time, Kent Communications was the recipient of a gift from God, and was again crippled, causing the staff to relocate to the back-up 911 center located nearby.

At 2332  Hrs., Firebox 40-2 was struck, alerting units from Kennedyville, Chestertown, Crumpton, Betterton, K&QA R/S and Kent EMS for the reported House Fire at 27911 River Rd. Tower 6 (w/5) and Tanker 6 (w/2) responded immediately followed closely by Engine 6-7 (w/4) and Rescue 6 (w/3). Tower 6 arrived. and advised of a 2 story SFD fully involved, and this was actually in the 60-5 box area. Deputy 6 established Old Morgnec Road Command. Both 1 3/4 lines were stretched from Tower 6, with Tanker 6 providing water supply. Upon the arrival of Engine 6-7, an additional 1/34 was stretched from the tanker to assist. As operations were beginning a large LP Gas tank in the rear of the structure began venting and lit off. Operations were now shifted to keeping the tank cool, and allowing the gas to burn off. Upon the arrival of additional crews, a fourth hand line was placed in service and a tanker shuttle initiated. The house was located in a rural non-hydrant area so additional tankers were called in. Once the tank had finished burning off, operations then reverted back to extinguishing the remaining fire in the structure. Chestertown units operated for, 4 hours and 14 min with 20 personnel on scene.

Units On Scene: Engines 67, 53, 3, QA55, Tankers 6, 4, 3, QAET7, QA6, Tower 6, Rescue 6, Rescue Pumper 4, QA Rescue Engine 7, Paramedic 8-1, Utility 8-1 with Special Operations Trailer 8 and FM68.

ENGINE CREW TO SINGERLY

On Wednesday July 22nd, a request was received from the Singerly Fire Company for an engine to stand by for them on Friday due to numerous activities going on in Cecil County that would have their personnel and resources stretched thin. On Friday July 24th at approx. 1200 hrs, Engine 6-7 with a crew of 4 (FADO C. Carter, Capt. B. Russum, Capt. J. Darling, FF D. Bennett), set out for Elkton. A normal 45 minute ride turned into a 3 hour adventure including a working boat fire and an MVA.

Just as the engine was crossing the Sassafras River, Cecil County struck out the box 107-S for the boat fire at the Granary Restaurant, Georgetown.  Since the engine was in the area it immediately responded and as it approached the area, could see a column of smoke. The vessel was docked at the end of an old private dock approx. 300' from shore. The dock ran straight off the end of a private yard and access was difficult. Engine 6-7 arrived at the public landing and found a large catamaran sailboat with smoke showing from the cabin area. The engine was nosed up to the boat ramp for drafting, and 500' of 3" line along with the 150' dead load was stretched across a fence, through a yard and out the dock to the boat. The boat operators advised that they had fire in the cabin involving the A/C unit, walls and a still energized electrical panel. Capt. Darling and FF Bennett then utilized dry chemical extinguishers and entered the cabin making a quick knock on the fire, halting its rapid extension. Once power was secured, personnel began performing overhaul. Units operated on scene for approx. 1 hr. and 15 minutes.

Units on scene: Engine 6-7

CC Engine 116, CC Boat 172, CC AMB 191, CC PM-3, Boat 3

Engine 6-7 arrived just behind AMB 394 and PM-2 to find a 3 vehicle MVA and a total of 3 pts. to be transported. Engine 6-7 crew assisted EMS and secured the vehicles.

After a few minutes of the crew standing in two states at one time (the call was on the MD/DE line) the engine finally made it to their destination at approx. 1500 hrs. The engine remained on standby until the first crews returned at 2100 hrs.
