Officer and Firefighter of the Year Announced

Friday, January 29, 2021

The Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company proudly announces the 2020 Officer of the Year and Firefighter of the Year recipients.

The 2020 Officer of the Year is Lieutenant Steve Bilinski. The Officer of the Year is selected based on a multi-faceted evaluation of the member’s contribution to the overall mission of the fire company. In making the selection, the Chief Officers consider the following attributes… Attendance at emergency incidents, drills, meetings, and fund raisers. Of equal value, they consider the personal qualifications the member brings to the table, including leadership qualities, knowledge of the firefighting profession, ability to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fire service leader, and the ability to work well with other members of the organization. Steve is a graduate of Washington College and is employed by Dixon Valve. Please join us in congratulating Steve on a job well done and wish him well as he continues his growth as a fire service leader and member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company.

The 2020 Firefighter of the Year is Firefighter James “Jimmy” Swindell. The Firefighter of the Year is selected based on a multi-faceted evaluation of the member’s contribution to the overall mission of the fire company. In making the selection, the Chief Officers consider the following attributes… Attendance at emergency incidents, drills, meetings, and fund raisers. Of equal value, they consider the personal qualifications the member brings to the table. These include knowledge of the firefighting profession and the willingness to step up in the absence of an officer, performing the roles and responsibilities usually reserved for an individual formally appointed to those positions. Also considered is the ability of the member to work well with other members of the organization. In addition to his above average contributions to the fire company, we also draw attention to the fact that Jimmy is the proud father of twins, a boy and a girl, who just turned one on January 27, 2021. We extend our special gratitude to Amanda Swindell, wife and mother, for allowing him to participate with the fire company. Between the fire company and fatherly duties, he is a busy boy. Jimmy is employed by Service Today as an HVAC tech. Please join us in congratulating Jimmy on a job well done and wish him well as he continues his growth as a member of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company and potentially a future fire service leader.
