Water Problems - Clipper Way, Chestertown

Friday, December 30, 2022
At 6:06 pm pm, Christmas Evening, the Chestertown VFC was dispatched to the 100 block of Clipper Way - Chestertown Landing, for a water leak. It was the second call to this building in less than an hour… for the same problem. For this incident, a neighbor had reported water entering their apartment.
First arriving found water coming from under the neighboring door, and out other parts of the building, and also entering the neighbor’s apartment. Using Knox Box key access, entry was made to the affected apartment. Fortunately, unlike the earlier incident within the past hour, this was an unoccupied unit. Crews found a domestic water pipe (not a fire sprinkler pipe) had ruptured, likely after being frozen, with an unrestricted flow of water coming into the apartment. A partial ceiling collapse had also occurred.
To stop the leak, the water main / meter, located in front of the unit, was accessed. The water was shut-off to the affected unit. Electric to that unit was also secured. Chestertown Landing maintenance, already there because of the earlier incident in the same building, assumed responsibility for the situation. Our crews cleared and returned to the station.
Unfortunately, as we previously stated… as the weather warms over the next few days, we’re anticipating more incidents like this. That prediction is starting to gain traction.
