Vehicle Fire - Cannon Street, Chestertown

Friday, December 30, 2022
On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at 4:44 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, and Kent County EMS, along with multiple mutual aid companies, was dispatched to 600 Cannon Street, near South College Avenue, for the vehicle fire with exposure to a structure. Instead of near 600 Cannon, the incident was found to be along the alley to the rear of the 500 block of Cannon Street. There was no threat to any structure. Unbeknownst to many people, this byway is publicly owned by the Town of Chestertown. It’s official designation is Railroad Avenue, and part of a mostly undeveloped public right-of-way that runs along the former RR (now the Rail-Trail) from near the south end of Queen Street, to High Street.
First arriving found a vehicle, for unknown reasons, had gone into a deep ditch. In a vain attempt to extricate the vehicle, the driver continued to spin the wheels until fire ensued. When law enforcement arrived, prior to the arrival of the fire company, they assisted the driver from the vehicle, and began fire suppression efforts.
First arriving fire units found a vehicle as previously described. The fire was still smoldering around and under the vehicle. Accessing the Rail-Trail at Lynchburg Street, our Brush Truck proceeded down to the incident. Using the booster reel line, firefighters proceeded to finish extinguishment of the fire.
With the fire under control, we cleared the scene. Investigation of the incident was turned over to the Chestertown Police Department.
