Last night, members of our department conducted a focused training session on our Tower apparatus, specifically working on depth perception and spatial awareness from the turntable. This type of training is critical for developing the ability to judge distances from an elevated platform—a skill essential for safe and effective aerial operations during real emergencies.
Held behind the firehouse, the session utilized the Tower and strategically placed traffic cones to simulate obstacles and targets. Two of our newer members found the hands-on experience especially valuable as they continue to build their operational skills. For several others, it served as an important refresher to maintain sharpness in a high-risk environment.
Understanding how height and angle can distort perception helps ensure more accurate ladder placement, improved victim rescue operations, and safer apparatus positioning around structures. Consistent, scenario-based training like this enhances both individual competency and team coordination.
