Motor Vehicle Collision - Chirch Hill Road, Chestertown

Wednesday, December 30, 2020

On Monday, December 28, 2020 at 7:53 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched as automatic Mutual Aid (for the Church Hill VFC) to Church Hill Road (Maryland 213) near the Bennett & Cohey Salvage Yard, south of Chestertown, for a Motor Vehicle Crash reported with Entrapment. The additional information provided indicated three (3) vehicles were involved with one entrapped.

As Monday night was a regular drill night for us, we were attended with several full crews. Our personnel overheard the initial Queen Annes County dispatch and thus were able to respond within one minute of being dispatched by Kent County.

We arrived and confirmed three vehicles involved, with one patient pinned in the vehicle. There was also a second patient from another vehicle that had already self-extricated. The third vehicle was located approximately 100 yards south of the main incident. The crew from Church Hill VFC, the company of record for this incident, handled the evaluation of that vehicle and potential patients.

Upon arrival, our crew got right to work. With the assistance of Church Hill VFC personnel, they stabilized the vehicle with the patient that was trapped. Using our Hurst “Jaws of Life” system, we systematically removed the driver’s door, then performed an evolution called a dash roll. The patient was quickly removed from the vehicle and transferred to the care of EMS.

Subsequently, two patients were airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The condition of the patients is not known at the time of this release. Our Engine 67 responded to manage the helicopter landing zone.
