Our “Inside the Fire Station – Member Spotlight” profile for November is Ms. Susan Joyner. Susan joined the Chestertown VFC in 1994 and was awarded Life Membership in 2018. In addition to her participation as a regular member, she is also a member of the fire company Auxiliary.

In past years, Susan has served as Company Secretary and Company Assistant Secretary. Since joining us, her participation has become a veritable laundry list of roles and responsibilities. She serves as the Chairperson for our Company Store… the committee that oversees our company apparel such as hats, tee shirts, hoodies, etc. Susan serves on the Special Projects committee, which is primarily responsible for fund raising projects such as our Chicken BBQ’s and Pit Beef dinners. She currently serves, or has served, on the following committees… Annual Banquet and Installation of Officers, Company Picnic, our annual Truck or Treat Halloween event, and the LOSAP committee. LOSAP is an acronym for Length of Service Awards Program. The LOSAP committee tracks individual member’s participation in company activities. Points are awarded to members for the county volunteer fire company retirement fund, and towards the state tax credit program, available to qualifying members of Maryland volunteer fire companies. We also use LOSAP points to measure members’ participation in fire company activities.

Susan is married to Claude Joyner, also a long-time Life Member of the Chestertown VFC. Claude is a Past Chief of the company and this year is currently serving as an Assistant Chief and Board of Director. Claude and Susan live in Chester Harbor, just across the bridge in Queen Annes County. They have two children, daughter Erin and son Zachary.
