Car Fire - Prospect Street, Chestertown

Friday, March 29, 2024
On Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 2:47 pm, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with multiple mutual aid companies, was dispatched to the Vehicle Fire with Exposure to a Structure, in the 200 block of North Lynchburg Street. The location is between Calvert Street and Prospect Street.
The Chestertown Police Department was the first to arrive, finding a passenger car on fire. The main volume of fire was in the engine compartment. Heat from the fire was melting the vinyl siding of the home, however, the fire never physically involved the structure. One of the photographs appears to show the house on fire, but this is misleading. The fire that appears to be on the structure is coming up from the car.
Until the arrival of fire apparatus from Chestertown VFC, Chestertown Police personnel, including Chief of Police, Ronald Dixon, employed multiple fire extinguishers to keep the fire suppressed, preventing it’s spreading to the home. Fire Extinguishers are standard equipment in all police cruisers.
The response was held to the Chestertown VFC, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad, and Kent County EMS. All other mutual aid companies were canceled. EMS evaluated one civilian, who subsequently refused medical treatment and was not transported. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified but did not respond.
