Structure Fire - High Street, Chestertown

Monday, November 17, 2025
On Friday, November 14th at 2143 hours, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with mutual aid companies, was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 231 High Street - The White Swan Tavern. The caller stated they had lit a starter log in the fireplace and the building rapidly filled with smoke. While units were responding, the building superintendent began evacuating all occupants.
Ambulance 82 arrived first and reported smoke coming from the front of the building, known in the fire service as the Alpha side. Firefighters label each side of a building using letters - Alpha for the front, then Bravo, Charlie, and Delta as you move clockwise around the structure. Engine 68 arrived shortly after and completed a full walk-around to assess conditions on all sides. Crews then entered the building and found smoke present on every floor, including the attic.
The source of the issue was identified as a closed chimney flue that prevented the fireplace from venting properly. Prior to fire department arrival, a dry chemical fire extinguisher had been discharged into the fireplace. Due to the smoke, extinguisher residue, and the building’s use as a lodging facility, the Kent County Health Department was requested to respond.
While awaiting their arrival, fire crews began ventilating the structure using high-powered fans carried on the trucks. These fans are capable of pushing or pulling smoke and carbon monoxide from buildings, and crews worked methodically through each floor until the smoke was fully removed.
The Health Department cleared the building for normal operations, and the fire department deemed it safe for all 13 guests to return inside. Although a mild campfire-like odor remained, there were no hazards and no injuries reported. Crews operated for just over an hour to ensure the building was safe and clear.
