On Tuesday, December 9, 2025, just after 7pm the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with mutual-aid partners, was dispatched to a building fire at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation, located at 415 Morgnec Road. Kent County Dispatch advised responding units that an initial fire alarm activation had been received from the facility’s alarm monitoring company, followed by a 9-1-1 call reporting an active fire involving a heater inside one of the rooms.
Squad 6 arrived on scene and reported no visible fire conditions from the exterior. Crews initiated an interior investigation, noting a slight odor within the building. Out of an abundance of caution, command continued all units into the scene until the situation could be fully assessed and the presence of fire ruled out.
Following a swift and thorough investigation, crews determined the issue to be a malfunctioning heater, with the incident contained to the room where it originated. Command held the assignment to Chestertown units. Personnel remained on location for several additional minutes to reset the alarm system and ensure the facility was safely returned to normal operations.
Before clearing the scene, our members took a moment for a special visit with Life Member Sonny Everett, who has proudly served the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company for over 60 years. Sonny always enjoys time spent with fellow members, especially when fire trucks are involved. The highlight of the evening for everyone was sharing a few minutes with Sonny and seeing his familiar, unforgettable smile.
